Today TietoEnator donated a brand new Mobile Learning Center bus to Identity Foundation. It comes equipped with a white-board, a laptop with DVD player and a surround sound system. TietoEnator has been supporting the Identity Foundation initiative for over 3 years through their employee donation drive, where the employees of TietoEnator in Pune donate money from their salaries every month, which is doubled by TietoEnator and thus help in running the day-to-day activities of the education programme. The new Mobile Learning Center is the second center that Identity Foundation has started. The MLC programme is unique in nature because it is the first-of-its-kind initiative where the center is dedicated to the community at large and is to be used for the benefit of deprived children. Any organisation or group who works with deprived children can book this resource and take advantage of the bus which comes fully equipped with an audio visual infotainment facility. See More Photos…

Sheetal who attends government school regularly appeared for school exams for the 1st time this year and stood 4th in her class. Back in 2005, Sheetal, along with seven other children were admitted in a Corporation School. In those days, the Atikraman Group (anti-encroachment department, Corporation) frequented the area quite often. The parents at work required the kids to hide their belongings during these visits. Due to this unplanned nature of visits the children were unable to attend school on a regular basis and had to quit. In 2006, we tried yet again, mainly due to the response of the parents and the eagerness of the children to attend school. This time, Sheetal went to school every single day. Her parents, carpenters by profession always encouraged her. Sheetal’s parents, impressed by her performance are ready to go to any measures for her education. They went personally to the Corporation, requesting permission to stay where they are, as it would otherwise hamper their child’s education. Amazed by the dedication of the family, the Corporation too has developed a soft corner for them and visits the area rarely.
Net Results In April 2007, 36 children studying at the different centres of Identity Foundation appeared for the primary school examination conducted externally by the Pune Municipal Corporation’s Education Department. This was the first time that any of the children studying with us appeared for the examination. All 36 children cleard their exams successfully and are promoted th the next class! Children like Sheetal Chandubai Thori, originally from Gujrath, endorse our beliefs and inspire us to keep doing our work!

Children from many NGO's participated in this programme. A magic show and puppet show was followed by a scrumptious lunch. Our children had a rocking time playing in the children's area too!! We seem to have the minimum funds necessary to buy the bus. After contemplating and comparing the advantages and disadvantages of buying a second had and a new bus, we have concluded that it will make more sense to buy the new vehicle. The short listed vehicle is the Force Motors- 16 seater Citiline vehicle. The quoted price (before discounting) is aprox 575,000 INR. This is 125,000 INR above the planned price for the second hand vehicle. The next steps will be as follows… 1. We will negotiate the price with the company (Force Motors) 2. After the final price is agreed upon, we will buy the vehicle 3. After the vehicle is in our hands, we go to the RTO (Road Transport Authority) with the design we have in mind for making the internal changes and negotiate the Tax 4. Once we have the RTO approval, we do the necessary changes and the get the changes approved by RTO once again 5. After this the vehicle is ready to roll
The photo you see on the top is the actual photo of the shortlisted vehicle.

The children had a ‘history tour’ to the Pateleshwar Caves in the premises of Jangli Maharaj Temple today. The under ground caves are believed to be carved out of a single stone. The children had a rocking time on the temple lawns with food, songs and dance. Away from the crowded roads that they beg and make a living from, this was a welcome break! Out thanks to Mr. Adit Rathi (Polybond India – Rathi Group) for arranging transport for this activity!

Monsoons have caught us off guard (again)! The classes face a huge challenge in monsoons and summers because of lack of shelter. Breaks are a common occurrence. To tide over this, we had decided last year that we will build a mobile learning center - a bus/vehicle that can be converted in to a class room. From the last month the fundraising activity is at feverish pace to ensure that we get it done ASAP! We are planning to buy a small "Traveler". We don’t think we can afford to buy a new one, but a second hand one looks feasible if we are able to raise enough funds :-) We are also planning to put in an infotainment setup complete with TV, DVD player and lots 'software'(CD's and DVD's).
For more information on this programme, do write to us.
